Mid-July 2022 Member Update

Saturday, August 6: Round Robin at 8:30 followed by BBQ/Potluck at 11:00 am

On Saturday, August 6 there will be a round robin open to club members of all skill levels. Arrive by 8:30 am for play starting at 8:45. After the round robin, stick around for a potluck (bring a dish to share), and open play as well. Everyone is welcome to attend the potluck, even if you don’t play in the round robin.

Round robin spots are limited, so sign up on Court Reserve to reserve a spot for yourself. Please arrive on time — if you are late, there is no guarantee you will play.

Recent Tournament Results

Many members of our club played in the Redmond Rock Chuck Open two weekends ago. Congrats to everyone who played, and here are the members who took home some hardware (I’m so so so sorry if I missed anyone!):

Men’s 3.5 Doubles, Silver: Steve Gratton and partner Chris Davis

Mixed 3.5 Doubles, Gold: Whitney Smith and George Shrum

Men’s 4.0 Doubles, Silver: Cullen Foss and partner Ryan Roskowski

Women’s 4.0 Doubles, Silver: Jen Toso and partner Kathy Obannon

Thank you!

A big thank you goes out to Mark Hower, who has been first to the courts almost every day this summer. He’s been getting the gates open, courts ready to play, and welcoming lots of new members and visitors. Thank you Mark!

Court Reserve and Open Play

Just a reminder to please use Court Reserve to indicate if you are coming to play during Open Play times. This helps others know if there will be enough people to be worth driving to the courts. Also, as the weather changes during the year, people are often shifting earlier or later in the day to avoid the heat or cold, and indicating when they’ll be there in the notes of their sign up.

If you are having any issues with Court Reserve, please ask for help, either in person at the courts, or with a message to the club email lapinepick@gmail.com. We want to help you get it sorted out. There was an update to the app a couple weeks ago that made a lot of improvements, so you might give it a try again if you didn’t like the app in the past.

Wider World of Pickleball

Interesting to see that Tennis.com is covering pickleball now, at least in this issue.

And, small ask, but since pickleball got us through the pandemic, can it save America next?

At this point, are there any famous people who don’t play pickleball? Case(s) in point, courtesy of The Dink newsletter:

On the left: Country Singer Dierks Bentley and his band are touring the country and setting up a pickleball court at every stop.

On the right: the multiple record-holding running back has dipped his toe into the pickleball pond. And, he may be coming to a celebrity pro-am near you (fingers crossed!)
